Mention, position, citation

Three different facts that get flattened into one word far too often.

Mention

Your name appears in the answer. Counted as a rate over repeated runs, because a single appearance is noise.

Position

First name in the paragraph, or the fourth one in a hedging aside. Buyers act on the first. The report keeps them apart.

Citation

The URL the engine showed as its source. This is the only part of the answer you can reach with a change to your own site.

What a per-engine view shows that an average hides

Averaged across five engines, a brand named in four of them and absent from one looks healthy. Split by engine, that same brand has one specific problem, usually with one specific set of pages, and it is the kind of problem that can be worked on.

The reverse happens too. A brand doing poorly everywhere does not have five problems. It has one, and the per-engine view is what makes that obvious rather than hopeful.

We measured this on whole industries before selling it. The Dubai studies asked over a thousand answers per industry and the per-engine spread was the most useful column in every one of them: published studies.

Questions

Before you ask us

Is a mention the same as a citation?
No. A mention is your brand name inside the answer text. A citation is a link the engine shows as its source. You can be mentioned with nobody citing you, which means the engine knows the name from training rather than from a page it just read. You can also be cited without being mentioned, when your page informed an answer that named somebody else. The two are reported separately because they are fixed in completely different ways.
Does ChatGPT answer everyone the same way?
No. The same question asked twice can produce different brands, and answers vary by whether the engine searched the web for that particular question. This is why every question in the weekly run is asked 2 times and why the report gives a rate rather than a verdict.
Can you tell me why ChatGPT does not name us?
Partly, and only honestly. When the engine searched and showed its sources, you can see which pages it read instead of yours, and that is concrete. When it answered from memory with no sources, nobody can tell you the reason, including us. Saying otherwise would be inventing a mechanism.
Do you track only ChatGPT?
No. Every plan runs all 5 engines on every question. This page exists because the per-engine view is where the fixable problems show up, not because the engine is sold separately.
